This site is dedicated to the amateur radio (ham) hobby.
Like the music "Alabamy Bound" says, you too, could be "Alabamy Bound", or, for
that matter you could be bound for anywhere in the world, via ham radio!
We moved to Dothan, (Houston County) Alabama on May 1, 2009.
I prefer to qsl via the internet on the following qsl service: http://eqsl.cc . I do not
chase after qsl cards but do reply 100%. I do ask that if you prefer to qsl by mail that you
include a self addressed, stamped, size #10 envelope.
My wife, Carmen, WD4AGY holds the General class license and I have the Extra class.
We're fortunate to have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren who are
licensed, making a pretty neat ham family!
We're situated on about a half an acre on the outskirts of Dothan which is in the southeastern
corner of Alabama adjacent to Georgia and Florida.
I enjoy building and checking out wire antennas. My primary antenna is a vertically configured 40
meter full wave loop with the top at 60 feet. The sides are approximately 25 feet long and the
top and bottom 42 feet for a total loop length of 134 feet. I feed it with a Q match (stub)
making it operational on 40, 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters. I also use a 40 meter NVIS (Near Vertical Incident
System) antenna, at 7 feet, with 3 reflectors, ground mounted, that really performs admirably
and compliments the loop effectively.
If you would like information on constructing a great performing loop antenna along with the
recommended matching stub click on the drop down menu below and then click on the Loop Antenna.
This is an article that I wrote several years ago and is found at various websites around the
world but has been updated here.
I operate mobile using an ICOM IC-706 MKII G in my "pick'em" up truck, and from my home with
a Ten-Tec Eagle transceiver utilizing a Studio One (Bob Heil) boom mike,
a 2.8 GHz Dell computer, an Ameritron ALS-500-M solid state, no tune, mobile amplifer (but
running in the shack) and other assorted accessory items.
If you are interested in obtaining a ham radio license then click on "The American
Radio Relay League" in the Recommended Site "Goto" Window, below. If you'd like
to visit my wife's site, then click on "Carmen WD4AGY's Site".
I have several other hobbies including computers, and digital photography which
blend well with ham radio. I also design and maintain some web sites, including
two on-line businesses ShopsByRon.com,
and our newest, PetTrainingPlus.com
Although I spend most of my ham time on 40 meters, I operate on all of the hf bands
and pursue SSB, Digital Slow Scan TV (File transfer) SSTV, and Digital Voice with
an AOR 9000.
If you are currently operating on the 40 meter band and would
like to set up a schedule for Digital SSTV, or digital voice contacts, drop me an e-mail
(see below) and we'll set something up. All you need is a computer, preferably running "XP"
with a processor speed of at least 500 MHz and an interface (not absolutely required, but
certainly preferred!) I enjoy swapping actual photos, html pages, or documents that
originate with the transmitting station. In other words, original material.
Many folks just send stuff they have downloaded from the internet, which I don't
really enjoy, with rare exceptions.
The WA4HWN Mini-Chit Chat Shack
I have established the following link to an updated version my chat room providing a place to meet
hams with whom you have a schedule. Use the chat shack to agree upon a frequency suitable to
carry on your QSO. You can check propagation and frequency useage. Have fun!
